CASTLES
Castles – silent
relics, majestic and (sometimes) gloomy, some turned into ruins, some others
still erect, to the amazement of those visiting them in the hope of a return in
time...
Many were made up
of solid rock, in a temporary display of wealth and the misleading hope of
safety as protection against the enemy, built
up by a whole army of human ants, often working under whip crack, deprived of
any pride or desire of leaving something behind for posterity, setting down
anonymously not only then but also for the times to come...
These castles were
the temporary dwellings of people who dreamed of staying immortal, who claimed
to get everything without offering anything to anyone, not even to those who,
paying a huge tribute of blood, sweat and tears, made it possible for them to
live in the often austere, lugubrious comfort provided by such buildings! For
the great part of their inhabitants, these places were far from happy homes,
full of the joy of life.
The castle walls
were hiding dark rooms, full of the ”scent” of candle smoke, awfully cold in
winter, the shelter of occasional love affairs and petty interests, of mean
schemings, treasons, crimes, adulteries, nefarious decisions, ambition,
stupidity, selfishness...
While visiting
these castles and listening, when this is the case, to the often too long and
boring explanations of some guide, it is painful to find out how easily,
brutally and carelessly many of them were destroyed by conquerors of various
nations and/or confessions, how many of them were burnt down due to human
stupidity and how they were restored and/or rebuilt in a process during which
their initial concept was altered. We are obviously not taking into account
those which nobody cared for and had the
mischance of being left in ruins for
centuries on end!
Those that
survived to our days are impressive and attractive, we visit them carefree,
merry and happy to see them, ticking one more objective on our list of touristic
places, ignoring their past and the ordeal of those who erected them and were
forced to defend them, quite frequently ignoring their time-proven uselessness!
We never miss the
chance of immortalizing ourselves near/in them, observing the scourge of
the ”selfies” spreading all over like
plague.
But they really
look awesome, don’t they?
